Addictions
Intergenerational patterns Psychotherapy & Counselling Trauma
Addictive patterns often develop as ways to cope with emotional pain, stress, trauma or disconnection. Substances or behaviours may initially provide relief, regulation or escape, before becoming patterns that feel difficult to control. Addictions can include alcohol or substance use, compulsive behaviours, technology use, gambling or other repetitive patterns that interfere with daily life and relationships.
Many people feel shame around addictive behaviours and may believe the problem lies in willpower or self control. In reality, addiction is often linked to nervous system dysregulation, unresolved emotional experiences and unmet relational needs. Removing the behaviour alone does not address what it has been supporting.
Beyond Talk Therapy™ approaches addiction with curiosity rather than judgment. Work focuses on understanding what the behaviour is regulating or protecting, while building safer internal regulation and alternative supports. By addressing the underlying emotional and nervous system drivers, clients can develop more sustainable ways of coping, relating and caring for themselves.
This work can be integrated alongside other supports and is tailored to the pace and readiness of each person.
